I can’t tell you how much I love Curacao, a flavored liqueur made from the dried peels of the laraha citrus fruit which grown on the island of Curaçao, hence, the name. The brilliant blue color, the bright citrus/orange tones and slight bitterness of this liqueur makes a perfectly delicious and beautiful cocktail.
When Brandt Johnson, the head bartender at Club Med Columbus Isle was setting up for the evenings Food & Wine Festival cocktail demonstration, I was stunned at the beautiful tray of brilliant green sea of Green Flash cocktails.
What’s a Green Flash? In the Bahamas, it’s a “natural tropical phenomenon occurring at sunset. Very rarely, on utterly cloudless occasions, and just after the sun has disappeared underneath the sea, a brilliant band of green light as wide as the sun itself will flash across the horizon.”
As beautiful as this natural wonder appears, this cocktail is as delicious. I personally have not experienced this amazing sunset sight, but I’m now obsessed with seeing it one day. Back in my college days, I was obsessed with the aurora borealis and now I can add this green flash light show to my wish list. It’s a big wish list in the making, but I have a whole lifetime to wait for it’s coming.
Until them, I have this fabulous cocktail to hold me over. It’s fruity, slightly bubbly and perfectly beautiful both in taste and beauty for any tropical setting.
This will hold me over until I see the real deal over the sunset one day.

Green Flash Cocktail Recipe
1 oz vodka
1/2 oz Peach Schnapps
1/2 oz Blue Curacao
3 oz orange juice
3 0z sprite
ice
1. mix ingredients together, serve over ice.
2. garnish with an orange slice and maraschino cherry
3. lean back, savor the tropical evening and enjoy

You can see the green flash here in the Los Angeles beaches too, it has to be a clear day and you have to stare at the sun otherwise you’ll miss it. Then afterwards you’ll see green flashes for awhile when you close your eyes!

I don’t think that the drink is quite as tasty without the surroundings. I mean, it would look a little out of place in my backyard right now. lol.
I feel like you guys have been away for soooo long! Your trip has sounded amazing.
By the way I think I could us one or two of these cocktails, I love Curacao as well. In fact, I don’t think I have had any since I was in the islands, many moons ago .. Maybe we need to plan that climbing trip down that way & have you guys make a few of these – that sounds fun, climbing, camping & drinking!

Never tried Curacao before. With the people that you are surrender with I would take couple of these and enjoy the Club Med.
i am totally obsessed with seeing the aurora borealis, too. i tell nick all the time that it is one of my lifetime goals! i actually saw the green flash when i was in the bahamas diving a few years ago. it was gorgeous. i’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that you see it!!
