No, it isn’t snack time for the big dog! It’s cocktail time, ladies and gentlemen. While much of the nation has been freezing their ass off, down here in Southern California, the weather has turned warm and sunny. As the temperatures reach into the 80’s, we can feel our fruit trees stretching their limbs and roots as they pull out of their dormant slumber. And the WORC household starts itching to garden.
After a couple months of no serious gardening, we have gone fruit tree crazy. Those who have seen our garden tour video, will already know that for an urban home, we have a decent amount of fruit trees. We want more! This last week we have added 6 new fruit trees and we are still hunting down a couple rare trees to add to the family. With all of the new additions, we have had a labor intensive week of building new planters, re-potting, and rearranging our landscape.
We aren’t telling what our new trees are yet. That post will have to wait until after we acquire all of the season’s new delights. (Yes, we may even do an updated garden tour video after everything is settled in!) But we are happy to share that many of our old stand-bys are now able to find new root room in their updated locations. One of which is our Red Rio Grapefruit. In honor of our happy little grapefruit, we are going to celebrate a hand callousing week with a Salty Chihuahua cocktail.
This tequila version of a Salty Dog cocktail, is one of Diane’s current favorite cocktails. The combination of fresh grapefruit juice, tequila, and the salt make a bright, refreshing cocktail. Perfect for the rest of you who have to imagine what it is like to be in warm and sunny weather. I know, that was damn bratty of me, but it’s just the Chihuahua yapping.
P.S. Don’t short cut and leave off salting the rim, because it completes the cocktail drink. You don’t want to drink just a Chihuahua do you? Yuck!

I envy you with all these beautiful fruit trees. This drink will be refreshing when we have some sun & warmer weather. It looks beautiful.
Oh, wow, guys, that looks amazing and reminds me of my childhood days in Florida and my grandparents’ citrus fruit trees – fresh grapefruit for breakfast, plucked right off the tree (and lemons, tangerines…). What a refreshing chill-out that drink is! I’m with Diane – I think if I’d ever had this cocktail it’d be my favorite, too.
Love me some grapefruit!
I’m so jealous that you have warm weather! And you can grow fruit trees in your garden! I do pretty well for an urban garden, but if I were to plant any trees, I wouldn’t have sun for anything else…
80’s!!!! 80’s!!!! This morning it was 2 here. That that was our high!!! I’m so jealous!
Now that is sweet! Love those Red Rios and just have two left from my box!
i absolutely MUST make this now that i HAVE a teeny little chihuahua!
what sort of rare trees are you thinking? That would be my dream yard – all edible.
Ahhh, that is a surprise to be named later. A little hint, though. One is from Japan. Another is from Australia. Another is a new variety developed by the same people that created the pluot. Diane has let a few secrets out in her twitters, though. -WORC
Wow! That is one lovely and refreshing looking libation! We’ve got Ruby Reds all over the place around here and are always looking for new ways to use them. Thanks for the great idea!
Looks so good…..Tequila…..For me it would be 1….2…3…drink!…..sleep (probably on the floor)…
Nice photos guys!
Yes, I am doing my best to imagine a warm and sunny weather!;) Actually today was quite sunny, but cold, well below freezing. The cocktail looks very refreshing, though, and I simply love pink grapefruit! I once grew some seedlings from the seeds of a pink grapefruit I bought from a store, unfortunately they did not get very big, neither did they last very long.
Greetings,
Tiina
Guys,
I just started making whiskey sours, and now you turn me on to this???? The only problem is that it was 10 below when I got up this morning in the country (!) so I probably have to wait a couple of months.
By the way, that plane rescue was going on two blocks from our office on Thursday. I’m cold just thinking about it. But what luck. What an amazing pilot and what amazing rescuers. NYC was quite an amazed – and happy – City that day.
It’s wonderful to have something to feel good about. Now, if we can just get to Tuesday, perhaps we’ll be on our way back. Let’s all toast the new administration, shall we?
This looks really good. If I make my apartment a southern paradise, by turning up the heat. I think I would love this drink. It is beautiful. Oh by the way, extremely jealous of your fruit trees.
The color of your grapefruits is so seductive! We’re awaiting our next snow storm here in RI — I cannot imagine being out in the garden. Oh, to be in California….
Of course the drink looks totally amazing – wonder if I could substitute grapefruit for another citrus -
what a fun name, and in answer to your question, no, i don’t want to drink a chihuahua. as i watch the snow come down, i have to stress just how very jealous of ya’ll i am.
Love this drink and how beautifully you’ve shown it off! It reminds me of that joke “1 tequila, 2 tequila, 3 tequila…floor!”
Apriums! Yes.
I want medlars, persimmons, and pomegrantes. Maybe quince.
mmmm. i made something pretty close to this with blood red orange and grand marinier. sooo good!! your pictures are just gorgeous – as usual!
I’m one of them… damn freezing here
jealous with you, guys
Great photos as usual and nice ice cubes! What kind of mold do you use for those? I have these silicon ones that make perfect square cubes, but they’re such a pain in the butt to get out of the trays I’m looking for a better solution.
I love grapefruit to wake me up before work in the morning but can’t imagine a shot of tequila would do my career much good!
Will have to wait until it warms up before trying this one in an evening, methinks.
Your pictures are so juicy I can practically taste that drink! (smacking her lips) Can’t wait to try this recipe!
This looks so great! The colors are so alluring…maybe I’ll try this with pomelo.
Our friends Jeff & Andy were just making these at their house last weekend with all the wonderful grapefruits from their Palm Springs pad – sounds so good!
Yum city!!
