Today is truly an American Day.
We’ve been on a bit of a cocktail kick lately, with two back to back cocktail posts. But adding this third cocktail drink to the queue is quite appropriate for today, to celebrate this momentous day, for President Barack Obama.
To this new administration and the incredible man, President Barack Obama, who has given hope to millions, and of whom we look to for the future leadership of this marvelous nation, we’ve created a cocktail toast to you. Cheers, Mr. President. Salute, Gan Bei, Kanpai, Che Loong, Salud, Prost, and in every language to man, “Cheers!” May you lead up forward with strength and unity.

The Obamatini Cocktail Recipe
This Obamatini cocktail commemorating President Barack Obama, incorporates a few of the qualities of our 44th President. Pineapple juice from his home in Hawaii, the brightness of lime reflects the brightness of his intelligence, and the spice of chili to mirror this fire.
3 oz Pineapple Juice
2 oz. Gin
3/4 oz. Lime Juice
3/4 oz Simple Syrup
1/4 – 1/2 Serrano or Thai Chili
dash Angostura Bitters
1. Add ingredients into a shaker, crush the chili inside of the shaker. Add ice, then shake vigorously for 15 seconds.
2. Strain into a cocktail glass, garnish with a lemon twist, raise it to your dreams, and drink.
In case you missed it, or want to see it again, here a video of the 2009 Presidential Inauguration.

Beautiful and yummy drink.
I am not a huge fan of gin, i like more vodka.
Sante to obama
At first we made this with Vodka, and it seemed a bit flat. We used Hendricks Gin and it added a deeper character to the cocktail. We’d encourage you to give this one a shot with the gin, if you are daring. -WORC
Mr. B and I will be raising a glass with you tonight! Here’s to a future filled with hope not fear.
I’ll drink to that! L’Chaim!
Curious to know, what makes this cocktail a tribute to Obama? The pineapple for his Hawaiin roots, the bitters to remind us of the bush years we’re trying to recover from?
Sorry Julie, we forgot to add that part on the post. It was only on the printable recipe archive. As you guessed, the pineapple was for his Hawaiian roots. The bitters was actually just to add depth of flavor, not to remind us of the past. It is a time to look forward, not back with bitterness. But one might say that after experiencing a bit of life’s bitterness, we are able to savor our days more. The lime for was the brightness of his intelligence, and the chilies were for the fire of his character and convictions. Thanks for asking. -WORC
How nice, I love it. Certainly time to look forward and forget any bitterness from the past. Today is a trully happy day and it deserves a beautidul cocktail like this one.
mmmm. that certainly looks delicious! i love the flavors!
Cheers T&D! I love how you found a way to incorporate such different ingredients to mirror the new Pres.
another appropriate one for the occasion might be the Bushwhacker #4 from

2 oz. Coconut Cream
2 oz. Pineapple (Crushed)
1 oz. Amaretto
1 oz. Bailey’s Irish Cream
1 oz. Kahlua
Hmm, I think I have all those ingredients. Shall have to make some tonight!
Hi, Guys,
Nice to have a drink with you on this most auspicious day. I have to have a regular ‘tini since I don’t have pineapple juice on hand; but I will get some tomorrow.
In the meantime, I raise my glass to the Obamas – may they live in The White House in peace – and to you – may you flourish in 2009!
godspeed mr. president… (raising my virtual drink)
AWESOME! I love the references to his Hawaiian roots and his time in SE Asia:-) Are the bitter’s supposed to represent his time in Chicago?
Nah, like we mentioned on Julia’s comment, it was there just to add depth of flavor. But, one might consider that by tasting a bit of life’s bitterness, we are able to enjoy the sweetness even more. -WORC
Super! I love the idea of The Obamatimi. Looks so good. Even in Canada we’re celebrating this memorable day. Cheers!
I wish we were drinking, we could use one of these right now!
ohhh sounds yummy!
Sounds great! and if I drank I would be fixing myself one and toasting our new president along with you! Thanks for the mini-dream!
Yeah now that I’m weaning the baby, I can drink again. Nice creation, and here’s to a new era in American history!
Cool creation as well as the pictures!
Very creative and definitely representative of our new prez
What an inspirational cocktail! I will definitely be making this one, in celebration of President Obama.
Last night, I went out to celebrate and pulled up your recipe on my blackberry — I told the bartender I wanted to toast our new president with an Obamatini!
A tasty tribute to change and hopefulness.
Kanpai from Japan to the Obamas and to the WORC! A lovely drink to toast a lovely new generation in politics and life…here’s to loads loads of hope and really positive change the whole world can look up to!!!
OK, let me rephrase my comment just a teeny bit – I don’t mean the US is any better than any other country and that the rest of the world should “look up to” it. I really should’ve said “really positive change the whole world can respect.” There. That’s better!
Hi, just in case you haven’t noticed, there seems to be something wrong with the previous post. When I try to look at http://whiteonricecouple.com/blog/recipes/beverages-cocktails/grapefruit-cocktail/ (having finally bought some grapefruit!) I can only see the intro and then a bit about which XHTML tags I can use.
Thanks Sylvia. Looks like the visual editor tweaked the code. Should be fixed now. Hope you enjoy the cocktail! Time for us to have another. -WORC
What a great idea for a cocktail and a fun tribute to President Obama.
WOW!!! What a beautiful post!
The Obamatini sounds dreamy!! I can’t wait to try it!
I did a blog post in homage to Barack Obama yesterday, as well, should you be interested. Like so many, I was inspired to pay tribute via food and personal stories. Yesterday was such a momentous occasion, and the culmination of many dreams. And, a long time coming, at that.
I only wish I read this recipe yesterday so I could have toasted with it last night! Either way, what a delicious sounding cocktail, and touching post! Thank you so much!!!
Cheers,
~ Paula
Boy, you guys have been drinkin’ a lot lately. Does Obama know about this? He might like to know he has his own martini. Someone needs to tell him. Want to create a drink for my Super Bowl recipe contest? You can win a $250 gift card to Sam’s Club!
Hey that sounds excellent and appetizing! And what a truly great time this is! I’ve also created a cocktail in the man’s honor called the “Baroque Obama,” along with one called the “Juan McCain” as consolation for those who lost, which you can check out here: http://umamimart.blogspot.com/2008/11/happy-hour-juan-mccain-baroque-obama.html
hehe i like … obamatini
love the little lime swirls you got there ! cheers to Obama !
Neat tribute. Great photos and staging!
I am a patriot myself. And although I may not agree with some of President Obama’s positions, I am hopeful that he will be a successful leader of our Great Nation. Wasn’t Inauguration Day awesome?
LL
Yes! we did
That looks tasty! I would die to try one of your chili cocktails after seeing and reading so much about them
When you come to Seattle, you better tell me
maybe we can take you for a local Obama cocktail!
